Approach of Spring

God of each changing season,Creation speaks thy praise,But souls endued with reasonThe highest strain should raise.

Lo! wintry tempests sweeping,No more deform the sky,The crystal streamlet leapingProclaimeth Spring is nigh.

Farewell the dark dominionOf tyrant frost and snow,The robin spreads his pinion,And fragrant blossoms blow.

Awake to budding glory,Ye trees so long oppress'd,So naked, scarr'd, and hoary,By wrecking winds distress'd.

Break forth, ye tuneful bowers,Where thousand warblers fly,Unfold your robes, sweet flowers,The time of love is nigh.

Let the glad heart be pouringSuch lays as angels sing,Still to the bright world soaringOf everlasting Spring.
